Project Solar started from a frustration with the renewable energy industry's focus on profit over progress. In 2017, co-founder Trevor Hiltbrand was looking to have a solar system installed on his own home. He quickly became frustrated with the lack of price transparency, pushy sales tactics, rampant commissions, and the shocking price variance from one firm to another. Quotes ranged from $40-60k for a 10kW system.

 

Despite wanting to go solar, mistrust brewed, kicking off Trevor’s deep dive into the solar industry. Determined to tackle the glaring issues in solar sales, he immersed himself in the field, and an idea began to take shape—one that would address the problem of overpriced, shady solar practices.

 

What began as a DIY passion project quickly grew into something more, and when Matt Smith, Trevor’s co-founder heard the idea, the two set out to rebuild trust and value in the solar industry. Project Solar was founded in 2020, offers DIY and full service in 33 states, and in 4 years, has saved customers over $46M dollars*.

Trevor Hiltbrand

CEO

Trevor, a serial entrepreneur, has built his career off bringing transparency to notoriously shady industries. Shocked by the dishonest sales tactics of a solar sales rep back in 2018, Trevor had a vision of wider national solar adoption, by means of upfront and honest solar sales online. Trevor has a passion for business, investing, and marketing and lives in UT with his wife and four kids.

Matthew Smith

PRESIDENT

Matt was a high school English teacher who invested in, and helped found, Route in the summer of 2018. After leaving Route in 2020, he joined Trevor on his roof that summer to install their first DIY system. Today Matt lives in Utah with his entrepreneurial wife and their two kids. He enjoys surfing, learning languages, and getting to know new people. 

Rich Larson

CFO

Rich has worked in the Solar industry for the last 11 years in various finance leadership roles at different companies. He has a Masters degree in Accounting from BYU and worked in the software industry for 14 years prior to getting into solar. He enjoys watching and participating in all sports, but especially golf and basketball, and loves travelling, hiking, and spending time with family.  

Brian Anderson

VP OF OPERATIONS

Brian has spent most of his career in the SaaS industry, beginning as a software consultant in NYC before transitioning to Strategic Account Management and Operations at Podium. He’s passionate about enhancing both customer and employee experiences, striving to create a positive and impactful environment. In his free time, Brian enjoys biking, skiing, scuba diving, and exploring new places!
